The story of tonight’s game is without a doubt Dakota Hudson’s outing. Hudson would put together his 7th straight QS, pitching 7 strong innings (a career best) on 93 pitches.
The offense was quite the story too, as they picked up the slack and rattled off 13 hits, scoring 7 runs.
Harrison Bader would get the Cards on the board early in the top of the 2nd with a two out rbi triple into LCF, sneaking past the glove of Granderson, who appeared to lose the ball in the lights as it took a dive on him. KoWo would score on the play after he reached base with a one out walk.
Elieser Hernandez was opposing Hud, making his first start of the season. And outside of the Bader triple, he was looking pretty sharp thru his first 5 innings, striking out 7. Side note - I do not like this kids secondary pitches.
The defense behind Hud was phenomenal tonight. I have four circled plays in my book, and it takes a lot for me to mark them down like that. Geez-Deez-Geez inning ending DP in the 3rd, Swags play in the deep LF corner in the 4th with one out and runners on first and second on the Herrera fly out (tie game 1-1 at the time), Jive Muñoz back-to-back smooth plays to begin the 6th, and then Muñoz again to cap it off by robbing Rojas to leadoff the bottom of the 7th inning.
The Cards would plate 6 runs the 6th-9th innings. Goldy would smash a leadoff double off the top of the LF wall in the 6th, advancing to 3B on a Swags infield single to bring up Yadi (activated from 10-day IL today, had 2 hits) with runners at the corners. Yadi would lineup to Rojas at SS, who would fire it to 1B, trying to double up Swags, overthrowing Cooper and allowing Goldy to come in to score on a heads up play. KoWo then drew a walk, and him and Swags would pull off a double steal with Dex at the dish. Dex would eventually walk after apparently getting HBP to load the bases for Bader, who drew the walk for the easy rbi, making it 3-1 Cards.
Yadi (double), KoWo (bunt single), Dex (rbi single from the right-side), led off the 8th vs Adam Conley* with three consecutive hits. After Bader struck out, Cafecíto would pinch-hit for Hud, plating two rbi’s with a soft single into RF, making it a 6-1 game. The bats kept rolling against Conley in the 9th, as Swags greeted him with a leadoff oppo taco shot, his 18th HR of the year. Dex would pick up his second hit from the right-side this inning, which is a very good thing to see.
Gallegos and Brebbia threw the final two scoreless out of the Cards pen, Brebbia recording two strikeouts with that OG slider he possesses.
The Cardinals look for the sweep tomorrow night, sending the Liz King (4-6, 4.54) to the hill. Mikolas will be opposed by Jordan Yomamoto (apparently?), who would be making his major league debut. First pitch 6:10pm c/t.
Most importantly, LGB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know where my attention will be tomorrow night, let’s win that freakin’ cup!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers, Stew
