SONNY MF GRAY DAY!!!!!
JACKIE ROBINSON DAY!!!!
Alright, let’s compile the quickest recap I will ever write for this one, there wasn’t much to it besides Sonny Gray continuing to do what he does best.
The bats would scrape a run across for him in the 1st vs Ross Stripling on a Nolan Arenado rbi single to LF, scoring Goldy who advanced to 2B on a Noot sac bunt.
That’s all Sonny would need, as he went to work with a pitch count around ~75 tonight. Guess what? He didn’t need 75, he worked his 6 innings of shutout ball on 72 pitches (50 strikes).
Sonny would strikeout six A’s, getting four via the sweeper and two via the sinker.
The Cardinals would hit five doubles as a team tonight, and the final two came in a two-run 6th to open it up to a 3-0 lead. Noot would lead the inning off with a double to the LCF gap and two batters later, Contreras would drill his second double of the game down the LF line to plate Noot.
Jordan Walker would drive in Contreras with a two-out, opposite field, single off the newly entered reliever, Micheal Kelly.
Kittredge-JoJo-Helsley would work the final three frames to secure the series opening victory. Helsley would pick up his 6th save of the season, flashing an untouchable slider/fastball combo, needing just ten pitches to close it out, 3-1.
Lance Lynn (0-0, 2.63) gets the nod in game two, matching up against the lefty, JP Sears (1-1, 5.17). First pitch is scheduled for 8:40pm c/t.
Cheers, Stew
